Adaptation of cancer survivors: Development of an educational Nursing intervention focused on coping and anxiety

What was the main goal of this study?

Cancer survivorship has become an increasingly common reality due to advances in early detection and treatment efficacy. However, there is a significant gap in the availability of support programs focused on survivorship, especially in Portugal, where no evidence-based, structured interventions have been identified. This research aims to address this gap by developing an educational Nursing intervention to promote the adaptation of cancer survivors.
Following the Medical Research Council guidelines for the development of complex interventions, the research was conducted in four phases. Initially, a scoping review mapped the evidence on strategies and programs designed to support the adaptation of adult cancer patients and identified the need for a deeper understanding of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of these interventions. Subsequently, an exploratory qualitative study used focus group techniques to identify essential elements for the development of an educational intervention.

In the third phase, the Delphi technique was employed with a panel of experts to validate a set of items related to the structure and content of the intervention. The consensus  established that the intervention should include eight sessions, with the option of family participation, and address four domains: Adaptation, Coping, Emotion/Anxiety, and Resources. Finally, a protocol for a pilot study to test the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention was outlined.

What are the main results of the study?

The findings are noteworthy for their relevance to clinical practice, providing an evidence-based intervention that can serve as a valuable resource for nurses and open new perspectives for developing more robust and targeted health policies.
